At least 39 people have been killed and dozens more injured after two high-speed trains collided in Spain.
The accident occurred shortly after 9.00 a.m. (0800 GMT) when a Renfe train and an Iryo train collided, causing two Iryo carriages to derail, according to a government spokesperson for the Castilla-La Mancha region.
Rail operator Adif said the high-speed rail line connecting Madrid with the southern Andalusia region has been suspended following the collision.
One of the trains was reportedly travelling from Madrid to Seville. Two carriages are said to have derailed and fallen down an embankment, while at least one carriage was reported to have caught fire and suffered extensive damage.
Emergency medical teams, including several air ambulances, were deployed to the scene to assist the injured.
The mayor of Urda, Manuel Galan, said emergency services had asked the local authorities to prepare a sports hall to accommodate injured passengers.
The Madrid-Andalusia high-speed rail line is a popular route for tourists travelling between the Spanish capital and southern Spain.
