At least 18 people were killed in an attack carried out by the Iran-aligned Houthi movement on a Yemeni government military training camp in Shabwa province on Monday, according to four government and medical sources cited by Reuters.
Government sources said the attack targeted soldiers during a morning training session and was carried out using three ballistic missiles.
Fighting between the Saudi-led coalition supporting Yemen’s internationally recognised government and the Houthis, who control the capital Sanaa and large parts of northern Yemen, has intensified in recent weeks.
The escalation has become another front in the wider regional conflict that began following US and Israeli strikes on Iran in late February.
Earlier this month, government forces launched an offensive to recapture areas held by the Houthis, making advances near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a key shipping route at the entrance to the Red Sea.
The war in Yemen began in 2014 when the Houthis seized control of the capital, Sanaa, forcing the government to withdraw south. A Saudi-led military intervention followed in 2015, resulting in years of fighting and a stalemate before a truce was reached in 2022.
The truce remained in place until this year, when fighting escalated again.
