National Freedom Front (NFF) Leader and former Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa has accused the Tangalle Divisional Crime Investigation Unit of deliberately editing and distorting the statement he provided on October 9, regarding his earlier comments about the arrest of a suspect known as “Beliatte Sana” or “Puwakdandawa Sana.”
Addressing the media today (October 10), Weerawansa claimed that although he had given a three-hour-long statement during his visit to the Tangalle office, the Police had released only selected excerpts to the media, omitting key parts that clarified his stance.
He alleged that the partial release of his statement appeared to be a deliberate attempt to hide the political connections of the suspect and to mislead the public.
Weerawansa further criticized the Police for acting in a manner that, according to him, compromises their independence and portrays them as a tool of government propaganda.
“The statement released by the Police is completely distorted. Such behavior is unbecoming of a law-respecting Police service and instead reflects a political smear campaign,” Weerawansa said in his remarks.
