The expansion project of Terminal 1 at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake has commenced, with the development expected to increase the terminal’s annual passenger handling capacity to 10 million.
Deputy Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation Janith Ruwan Kodituwakku said the project will be implemented in four phases and is scheduled for completion within one year.
As part of the expansion, 36 new check-in counters will be installed, while a new fully equipped lobby area will also be constructed to enhance passenger convenience and improve airport operations.
