Sudan’s army has been accused of carrying out a series of drone strikes that reportedly killed more than 300 people, including dozens of people travelling to attend a funeral.
The Sudan War Observatory, which monitors the conflict that began in 2023 between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), reported that 150 people were killed in drone strikes in two areas of West Kordofan state on Sunday evening.
Meanwhile, 153 people were reportedly killed when drones struck a market in Abyei, a disputed border region between Sudan and South Sudan, on Monday, according to the region’s information minister.
A military source told the BBC that the Sudanese army carried out the attack, claiming the market was being used as a fuel supply site for the RSF.
The attack has heightened tensions between Sudan and South Sudan, which jointly administer Abyei. Both countries claim ownership of the oil-rich region, with the dispute remaining unresolved since South Sudan gained independence in 2011.
South Sudan has summoned Sudan’s ambassador to lodge a formal protest, amid concerns that the conflict could spill across the border.
