Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya announced that 94.38% of the Rs. 25,000 disaster relief payments have been distributed to affected residents in the Colombo District.
She made the statement while speaking to the media after the Colombo District Disaster Management Committee meeting.
The Prime Minister said 7,535 applications have been received under the Rs. 50,000 compensation scheme, with 3,049 payments already completed. She assured that the remaining payments will be finalized within the next two to three days.
Dr. Amarasuriya also noted that the government has introduced a Rs. 15,000 assistance grant for schoolchildren impacted by disasters to help purchase books and other essential items. To date, 14,597 applications have been submitted, with more expected.
She emphasized that authorities aim to complete all relevant payments before the new school term begins on January 5.
