Sri Lanka delivered a series of outstanding performances at the 2025 South Asian Senior Athletics (SAAF) Championships held in India, claiming multiple gold and silver medals across track and field events.
In the men’s 400m hurdles, Ayomal Akalanka secured silver with a time of 50.29 seconds, while the women’s 400m hurdles saw Sri Lanka dominate the podium. Dasuni Kaushalya took gold in 58.66 seconds, and Araliya Sathsarani followed with silver at 59.24 seconds.
The men’s javelin throw was another strong showing for Sri Lanka, with Rumesha Tharanga winning gold with a throw of 84.29 meters, and Sumedha Ranasinghe claiming silver with 81.62 meters. In the women’s javelin, Nadeesha Dilhani Lekamge not only won gold but also set a new championship record with 60.14 meters.
Middle-distance races were equally impressive. Harsha Karunaratne earned gold in the men’s 800m in 1:51.96, while Thakshima Nuhansa secured silver in the women’s 800m with 2:51.51.
Sri Lankan athletes also excelled in jumps and sprints: Madushani Herath won gold in the women’s long jump (6.23m), Pehansa Gamage took silver in the women’s high jump (1.74m), Idusara Rajamuni earned silver in the men’s 200m (21.42s), and Safiya Yameek claimed gold in the women’s 200m (23.58s).
Endurance events and relays added to Sri Lanka’s medal tally. Rasara Wijesooriya won gold in the women’s 10,000m (34:39.95), while the men’s 4x400m relay team captured gold (3:05.12) and the women’s team earned silver.
Sri Lanka’s athletes demonstrated remarkable consistency and talent across disciplines, further solidifying the country’s prominence in South Asian athletics.
