A major outage at Cloudflare, one of the world’s leading internet infrastructure providers, caused widespread disruptions on Tuesday morning, temporarily knocking several high-profile websites offline — including X (formerly Twitter) and ChatGPT.
Users attempting to visit affected platforms were met with Cloudflare-generated error messages, signalling a system malfunction within the company’s network.
Cloudflare manages one of the largest global web infrastructures, providing security, traffic management, and uptime support for millions of websites. Its services act as a protective intermediary, ensuring sites remain available and resilient against traffic surges and cyberattacks.
Tuesday’s outage highlights the heavy dependence of online platforms on large-scale infrastructure providers. Similar to past disruptions involving Amazon Web Services (AWS), a single point of failure can cascade across the internet, temporarily disabling numerous unrelated services.
Cloudflare has not yet released detailed information on the cause of the outage.
