A stock of 170 kilograms of heroin was destroyed today after the completion of all legal proceedings, under strict supervision and security arrangements.
The narcotics were originally seized on September 7, 2021, following a tip-off received by the Batticaloa Divisional Criminal Investigation Bureau, with assistance from the Sri Lanka Navy. The seized drugs were subsequently handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau for further investigations.
The consignment included 106 kilograms and 248 grams of heroin, along with 90.5 grams of opium.
Upon the conclusion of court proceedings, the narcotics were produced as exhibits before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court. They were transported at around 6.00 a.m. today to the Lactowatte police incinerator in Wanathavilluwa under heavy security provided by the Special Task Force (STF).
After arriving at the incinerator, the drugs were re-weighed and re-verified. Following all required inspections, the destruction process was carried out at approximately 9.00 a.m., in the presence of Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanka S. Bodaragama.
