The Sri Lanka Navy has officially taken charge of a consignment of firearms, ammunition, and related equipment belonging to Onboard Security Teams (OBST), as part of its ongoing maritime security operations project.
The formal handover took place on 30 October 2025 at the OBST Armoury Complex in Galle, under the provisions of Gazette Extraordinary No. 2449/27, issued on 13 August 2025.
The new legal framework authorizes the Navy to supervise, store, and safeguard weapons used by Private Maritime Security Companies (PMSCs) operating within Sri Lanka’s maritime jurisdiction.
In addition, the Navy has signed agreements with local representatives of PMSCs to ensure the secure storage and regulated transportation of OBST firearms and equipment under strict naval oversight.
During the event, naval officials held discussions with representatives from more than 20 PMSCs, focusing on safety procedures, facility access, and compliance standards—reinforcing the Navy’s commitment to enhancing maritime security and international cooperation.
