Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Jagath Withana has been provided with personal police protection following alleged assassination threats against him. Two officers have been assigned to safeguard the MP, authorities confirmed today.
Withana revealed that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) had formally notified the Kalutara DIG to investigate the threats, which include a named suspect and a plan to attack him while exiting his vehicle. He addressed Parliament earlier this week, urging immediate government action to prevent any potential harm.
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa expressed concern, highlighting the gravity of such threats in light of the recent murder of Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Lasantha Wickramasekara, who was killed despite requesting police protection. Premadasa emphasized that similar risks faced by opposition MPs should not be ignored, stating, “It is not a joke. We must act before another tragedy occurs.”
