The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has filed a complaint with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), alleging a coordinated online campaign spreading false information to discredit the party and its leaders, including MP Namal Rajapaksa.
Addressing the media, SLPP National List MP Pasan Kasturi Fernando said the complaint was lodged today, highlighting a surge in social media content targeting former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and other senior members.
Fernando claimed that the misinformation intensified following recent police operations that resulted in the arrest of several individuals connected to narcotics trafficking. He alleged that certain groups are attempting to politicize these investigations by falsely linking the suspects to the SLPP.
Referring to the recent arrest and extradition of Ishara Sewwandi — a key suspect in the murder of underworld figure Ganemulla Sanjeewa — Fernando said that false narratives were being circulated using her name and old SLPP campaign material.
“There is a deliberate attempt to portray the SLPP as a party involved in criminal activities,” he said, adding that similar allegations in the past had been proven baseless in court.
He further accused organized groups of operating fake social media accounts and funding paid campaigns to spread disinformation, urging the CID to conduct an impartial and thorough investigation into the matter.
