BYD Launches Massive Recall of 115,000 EVs Over Battery and Safety Defects

Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD has announced a recall of more than 115,000 Tang and Yuan Pro electric vehicles due to design flaws and potential battery safety risks, according to China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR)

The recall involves 44,535 Tang series SUVs manufactured between March 2015 and July 2017, and 71,248 Yuan Pro models produced from February 2021 to August 2022.

SAMR stated that design defects in some Tang SUVs could lead to abnormal functioning of key electrical components, while issues with the Yuan Pro models may cause improper battery installation and sealing — raising the risk of overheating or reduced insulation.

BYD said it will address the problems by providing software and component upgrades through its authorized service centers.

This marks BYD’s largest recall to date, following smaller recalls earlier this year. In January, the company recalled 6,843 Fangchengbao Bao 5 plug-in hybrid SUVs over fire risks, and in September 2024 nearly 97,000 Dolphin and Yuan Plus EVs were recalled due to potential steering unit faults.

BYD emphasized that it remains committed to enhancing its quality control and safety measures amid growing global demand for its electric vehicles.
