Google has announced a massive $15 billion investment to establish a state-of-the-art data center and artificial intelligence (AI) hub in India — its largest-ever investment in the country.
The project, to be developed over five years from 2026 to 2030, will be located in the port city of Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The new facility will serve as Google’s largest AI hub outside the United States and a central node in its global network of 12 AI centers.
“This is the largest AI hub we are investing in anywhere outside the US,” said Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian during the launch event in New Delhi. “It will act as a digital backbone, connecting different parts of India and accelerating AI innovation across industries.”
The data center campus will begin with a capacity of 1 gigawatt and is expected to expand to multiple gigawatts as demand grows. The facility will also include a new international subsea gateway and advanced energy infrastructure to support large-scale AI computing.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) that he had spoken to Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the “landmark development,” calling it a major step in advancing India’s digital and AI capabilities.
With India projected to surpass 900 million internet users by the end of this year, the demand for AI-driven tools and infrastructure continues to surge, positioning the new Google AI hub as a critical catalyst for the nation’s digital growth.
