The Supreme Court today ordered that notices be issued to a group of former senior officials, including former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, in connection with a Fundamental Rights petition.
The order was made when a petition filed by Dr. Ravindranath Dabare was taken up for consideration. The petition seeks a directive to recover compensation allegedly paid unlawfully to former Ministers and Members of Parliament for property damage sustained during the unrest that followed the attack on the “Aragalaya” protest site on May 9, 2022.
Accordingly, the Court instructed the petitioner’s legal team to serve notices on the respondents named in the case, including:
- Former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa
- Former Defence Secretary, Retired Major General Kamal Gunaratne
- Former Inspector General of Police C.D. Wickramaratne
- Former Navy Commander Nishantha Ulugetenne
- Former Ministers of Public Security Prasanna Ranatunga and Tiran Alles
- Former Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security Jagath Alwis
The petition was heard before a Supreme Court bench comprising Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena and Justice Gihan Kulatunga.
