The Chief of Staff and Deputy Secretary-General of Parliament, Chaminda Kumara Kularatne, has been suspended with immediate effect following a decision by the Parliamentary Staff Advisory Council.
The decision was taken after a preliminary investigation found that he had allegedly provided false information in relation to his appointment. As a result, the Advisory Council has also resolved to initiate a formal disciplinary inquiry into the matter.
Chaminda Kularatne is the second most senior official in Parliament. The Parliamentary Staff Advisory Council, which met yesterday, comprises the Speaker, the Leader of the House, the Leader of the Opposition, the Minister of Finance or a designated representative, and the Secretary-General of Parliament.
Prior to his appointment as Deputy Secretary-General in 2023, Kularatne had served in several senior roles, including Secretary to the Chief Government Whip, Additional Secretary to the President, Additional Secretary to the Prime Minister, and Additional Secretary to the Leader of the Opposition.
