In a major step toward achieving Sri Lanka’s target of net zero carbon emissions by 2050, the 20-megawatt Windscape Mannar wind power plant was officially connected to the national grid this morning (15) under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

The project marks a milestone in the country’s renewable energy sector, with four of Sri Lanka’s largest wind turbines—each with a capacity of 5 megawatts—being commissioned for the first time in the nation’s energy history.

The initiative is expected to help retain significant foreign exchange within the country by reducing reliance on foreign contractors, thereby contributing to the strengthening of the domestic economy.

President Dissanayake unveiled the commemorative plaque declaring the wind power plant open and took part in the turbine commissioning ceremony.
