Airline Crew Member Arrested at BIA with Gold Worth Rs. 45.9 Million

An airline cabin crew member has been arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake for attempting to smuggle a large consignment of gold into Sri Lanka.

The suspect was taken into custody by Sri Lanka Customs in the early hours of this morning while attempting to exit through the crew gate at the airport’s arrival terminal.

Customs officials recovered gold jewellery and gold biscuits weighing 1 kilogram and 163 grams, with an estimated market value of Rs. 45.9 million.

The suspect is a 27-year-old employee of a private airline and a resident of the Colombo area. Investigations revealed that the gold items had been concealed inside her travel luggage.

Customs authorities have launched further investigations into the incident.
