A police constable attached to the Suriyakanda Police has been arrested following an altercation with National People’s Power (NPP) Ratnapura District Member of Parliament Shantha Padma Kumara.
Police said the arrest was made on charges of wrongful restraint and use of criminal force.
MP Shantha Padma Kumara had filed a complaint with the Kolonna Police, alleging that the constable attempted to assault him. According to the complaint, the incident occurred while the MP was travelling from Kalugala to Halwinna, when the officer allegedly blocked the road with his motorcycle, forced the MP’s vehicle to stop, and attempted to attack him.
Meanwhile, the police constable has also lodged a counter-complaint, claiming that the MP and several others assaulted him and forcibly took his motorcycle.
The motorcycle was later recovered by police after it was found abandoned near the Kalugala Temple and has since been taken into custody.
Police said further investigations into the incident are ongoing.
