A total of 640 schools in the Uva, Central, and North Western provinces will not reopen tomorrow, according to Secretary to the Ministry of Education, Nalaka Kaluwewe.

Although schools that were closed due to the disaster situation caused by Cyclone Ditwah are scheduled to reopen island-wide tomorrow (16), the Education Ministry said a significant number of institutions remain unfit to resume academic activities.

The Ministry convened principals, teachers, and non-academic staff today (15) to make the necessary preparations for reopening schools where conditions permit. However, Secretary Kaluwewe stated that 640 schools across the three affected provinces have suffered damage or disruption and will therefore remain closed until further notice.

The Ministry of Education also announced that a relaxed policy on school uniforms will be implemented for students, as well as academic and non-academic staff, in disaster-affected areas, considering the difficulties faced by families and school communities.
