President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has announced a major boost to Sri Lanka’s defence capabilities, confirming that the country will acquire two C-130 aircraft and 10 helicopters as part of an ongoing military modernisation program supported by international partners.
Speaking during the parliamentary debate on budget allocations for the Ministry of Defence and Public Security, the President outlined several agreements aimed at transforming the armed forces into a technologically advanced, efficient, and modern military.
He revealed that India has provided around 70 jeeps along with technical support, while the United States will supply 10 TH57 helicopters. Tenders have already been issued to refurbish several existing aircraft and helicopters within the Sri Lanka Air Force.
The President further stated that two C-130 transport aircraft will be delivered in 2026 and 2027 through cooperation with the U.S. and Australia, significantly enhancing the Air Force’s long-range and heavy-lift capabilities.
Sri Lanka has also received two Beechcraft aircraft — KA360 and KA350 — from the U.S. and Australia, strengthening aerial surveillance and transport functions.
“Our helicopter fleet has weakened over the years,” President Dissanayake said. “With the arrival of 10 new helicopters and ongoing repair work, we are laying the foundation for a strong, efficient, and technologically advanced military.”
He affirmed that the government remains committed to building a modern defence force equipped to meet future security challenges.
