Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya has emphasized the importance of creating professional journalists who understand their responsibility and accountability in sharing accurate and reliable information, as the influence of digital and social media continues to grow.
Speaking at the certificate awarding ceremony of the ITN Multi Media Campus (MMC) held at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute, the Prime Minister said that misinformation has caused serious harm to society, as some content creators spread falsehoods for personal gain.
“Today, digital and social media have grown to a level comparable to traditional media. Professions such as content creators and YouTubers have now joined the ranks of traditional journalists. However, with this influence comes great responsibility,” the Prime Minister said.
The event recognized students who successfully completed the institution’s first certificate course, with gold awards presented to Abhisheka Dunukewela, Dimuthu Nirman, and Kavindya Gimhani for outstanding achievements.
Prime Minister Amarasuriya said the ITN Multi Media Campus plays a vital role in shaping the next generation of media professionals, broadcasters, and digital creators, helping Sri Lankan youth use their creativity to build sustainable careers.
“In today’s world, where Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, and Digital Analytics dominate the conversation, studying digital creation is essential. Providing young people with structured and practical education is necessary to ensure they use these tools responsibly,” she said.
The Prime Minister also noted that the government’s digitalization efforts aim to transform job seekers into job creators, empowering the next generation to contribute to the country’s progress.
“The future is bright for students armed with knowledge. As creative citizens capable of competing globally, you will have limitless opportunities to shape both your future and the nation’s,” she added.
Minister of Mass Media Nalinda Jayatissa, who also addressed the ceremony, commended ITN’s role in promoting digital literacy and supporting the country’s transition to a technology-driven economy.
“The government’s goal is to drive national progress through a new digital approach. Digital literacy is crucial for connecting citizens to the global community,” he said.
Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Media Kaushalya Ariyarathna highlighted the responsibility of content creators and advertisers in promoting positive social values.
“Many online advertisements spread false or harmful ideologies. Creative productions must promote equality, justice, and gender awareness. Merely owning a mobile phone does not make one a journalist — truthfulness and integrity in reporting are what matter most,” she said.
