Operations to curb illegal fishing by Indian fishermen within Sri Lanka’s territorial waters have been intensified, according to Deputy Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic Resources, and Ocean Resources Ratna Gamage.

The crackdown is being conducted jointly by the Fisheries Ministry, the Sri Lanka Navy, and the Police.

Deputy Minister Gamage stated that there has been a notable increase in the number of Indian fishermen arrested this year compared to 2024.

As of now, 328 Indian fishermen have been taken into custody, while the Navy has seized 41 Indian fishing vessels involved in these illegal operations.

He added that authorities will continue to strengthen patrols and surveillance in northern and northwestern maritime zones to protect local fishing communities and preserve marine resources.
