Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa held discussions with India’s Minister of External Affairs Dr. S. Jaishankar in New Delhi, focusing on strengthening bilateral relations and advancing regional cooperation.

The talks centered on enhancing connectivity, trade, and economic collaboration between the two nations. Minister Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s continued support to Sri Lanka, recalling New Delhi’s crucial assistance during the island’s economic crisis. He emphasized the importance of utilizing this recovery phase to establish a long-term and sustainable growth framework.

Premadasa presented Sri Lanka’s reform and growth roadmap, highlighting the need for debt sustainability as the country prepares to resume full debt servicing by 2028. He underscored that regional investment and integration would be essential to achieving inclusive and stable development.

The discussions also covered energy cooperation and infrastructure projects, including renewable power generation and regional grid connectivity. Dr. Jaishankar expressed readiness to facilitate collaboration opportunities for SJB parliamentarians in these sectors, citing India’s successful models of cooperation with Bhutan and Nepal.

Both leaders reviewed progress in maritime and air connectivity, as well as the proposed power grid interconnection. They also exchanged views on regional security and Sri Lanka’s strategic position in the Indian Ocean region.

Premadasa reiterated Sri Lanka’s commitment to a pragmatic and non-aligned foreign policy, engaging all partners while safeguarding national independence. Minister Jaishankar welcomed this stance, reaffirming that Sri Lanka’s stability is integral to India’s security and prosperity.
