A wild elephant was killed after being struck by a freight train traveling between Galgamuwa and Ambanpola around 8:45 p.m. on Sunday (27).
The Department of Railways confirmed that the collision caused temporary disruptions along the Northern railway line.
Officials said the elephant died on the spot due to the impact.
Wildlife officers and railway authorities have launched a joint investigation into the incident, as elephant-train collisions continue to be a recurring issue in the region.
