Sri Lanka Police have initiated a special investigation into officers involved in the arrest of the suspect linked to the murder of Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Lasantha Wickramasekara, following the circulation of arrest footage on social media.
Police Spokesman ASP F.U. Wootler said the inquiry will focus on identifying those responsible for recording and releasing the video, which has since gone viral online.
He stated that Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasuriya has taken special interest in the matter and instructed that the investigation be handled by a dedicated special unit.
ASP Wootler also cautioned that publishing visual material of suspects in ongoing cases could interfere with judicial proceedings and affect the rights of the parties involved.
The suspect, believed to be the gunman in the Weligama PS Chairman’s murder, was arrested in Navinna, Maharagama on October 26 following a joint police operation.
