Sri Lanka’s Inspector General of Police (IGP), Attorney-at-Law Priyantha Weerasuriya, has issued a stark warning that individuals linked to organized crime and drug trafficking are attempting to infiltrate the country’s political system.
The Police Chief revealed that some underworld figures have already entered politics and are preparing to contest in upcoming national elections.
“This is an urgent matter for political parties to confront,” Weerasuriya stressed. “They must decide whether to grant membership or nominations to those connected with organized crime and narcotics.”
He urged all political parties to act responsibly, emphasizing that the issue transcends political divisions and requires collective accountability.
According to the IGP, these criminal groups are using politics as a shield to legitimize their illicit operations.
“They wear white and commit dark deeds,” he remarked. “Their aim is to use political office to conceal their involvement in drug trafficking and organized crime.”
