The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) is taking steps toward a comprehensive and sustainable waste management plan as the city continues to generate nearly 450 tons of garbage daily, most of which is currently processed at the Kerawalapitiya waste-to-energy plant.

Colombo Mayor Vraîe Cally Balthazaar said the council has been holding active discussions over the past few months to identify long-term, eco-friendly solutions to tackle the growing waste burden.

She noted that the CMC is collaborating closely with the Western Province Waste Management Authority (WMA), which is expected to lead the development of a province-wide waste strategy.

Last week, the mayor and her team visited the Karadiyana and Kerawalapitiya waste management sites to review ongoing operations and explore opportunities for greater efficiency and cooperation.

Balthazaar emphasized that reducing waste begins with individual responsibility.
