A Sri Lankan delegation led by Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe, Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL), took part in a series of high-level bilateral and multilateral meetings during the 2025 World Bank Group and International Monetary Fund (IMF) Annual Meetings held in Washington, D.C., from October 13 to 18.

Throughout the sessions, Governor Weerasinghe met with the IMF Managing Director, the President of the World Bank Group, senior officials from both institutions, and representatives from the U.S. Department of the Treasury. The discussions reflected strong international support for Sri Lanka’s ongoing economic reforms and widespread acknowledgment of the country’s prudent macroeconomic management — including sound fiscal and monetary policies, strengthened financial stability, and enhanced governance.

Talks with multilateral and bilateral partners centered on expanding cooperation in infrastructure, energy, and digital transformation, as well as securing new financing and technical assistance for capacity building. The delegation also engaged with sovereign credit rating agencies, providing updates on economic recovery and reform milestones that helped reinforce investor confidence. Constructive interactions with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and participation in investor forums underscored Sri Lanka’s commitment to transparency, investment promotion, and economic stability.

At the Global Sovereign Debt Roundtable (GSDR), Sri Lanka expressed its support for global efforts to address debt vulnerabilities and improve coordination. Governor Weerasinghe highlighted the country’s near completion of its debt restructuring and the achievement of key IMF program milestones. He emphasized the importance of transparency, timely restructuring, and continued reform efforts, while advocating for greater clarity and consistency in international debt processes.

The outcomes of these engagements reaffirmed the international community’s confidence in Sri Lanka’s reform path and economic recovery.

Adding to the country’s recognition, Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe was honored with the prestigious “A Grade” award by Global Finance Magazine at the 2025 World’s Best Bank Awards Ceremony. The award acknowledges his leadership in maintaining prudent monetary policy, ensuring financial system stability, and guiding the Central Bank through challenging global economic conditions.
