After months on the run, Ishara Sewwandi — the prime suspect in the murder of underworld figure Ganemulla Sanjeewa — has been arrested in Nepal along with six others. Police confirmed that Sewwandi and her accomplices will be brought back to Sri Lanka tomorrow.
The arrests were made during a special joint operation led by Assistant Superintendent of Police Rohan Olugala and CID Inspector Gihan Chandima, in coordination with Nepalese security forces.
According to police, the first suspect taken into custody was Kennedy Bastian Pillai, also known as “J.K. Bai,” a notorious organized criminal, who was apprehended in the Bhaktapur area of Nepal. Based on information obtained from him, officers tracked down and arrested Ishara Sewwandi, who had been hiding in an apartment about 18 kilometers from Kathmandu.
The other suspects were arrested in separate locations. Among them are two residents from Gampaha and Nugegoda, as well as a couple from Jaffna.
The murder of Sanjeewa Kumara Samararatne, widely known as “Ganemulla Sanjeewa,” occurred on February 19 inside Courtroom No. 5 of the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court. Investigations revealed that the firearm used in the killing was supplied by Ishara Sewwandi, who fled the scene with the shooter immediately after the attack.
The alleged gunman, Samindu Dilshan, was arrested later that same day. Despite an extensive nationwide search involving the Colombo Crimes Division, Special Task Force, and several other agencies, Sewwandi managed to evade capture until now. Police later confirmed that she fled the country with the help of J.K. Bai.
