A major arms-related discovery has been made in the Veheragala Reservoir as police, acting on military intelligence, recovered more than 200 empty weapon magazines during an ongoing search operation.
The latest recovery includes:
- 214 empty T-56 magazines
- 38 LMG drum magazines
- 11 MPMG 200-round magazines
- 9 MPMG 100-round magazines
- 6 T-81 magazines
- 1 drum containing 100 rounds for 12.7mm anti-aircraft guns
The operation, which began yesterday afternoon, was carried out with the assistance of divers under the guidance of Army Intelligence.
Police suspect the magazines were deliberately dumped into the reservoir and have launched a full investigation to identify those responsible.
The Police Media Division confirmed that the findings will be reported to the Wellawaya Magistrate’s Court.
Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of further discoveries as search operations continue.
