Court Denies Bail for Shasheendra Rajapaksa

Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama on Monday (22) ordered former Minister Shasheendra Rajapaksa to be further remanded until September 30.

The ruling came as the court considered a bail application filed on Rajapaksa’s behalf in connection with charges under the Public Property Act. The Magistrate determined that there were insufficient grounds to release him at this stage.

Rajapaksa’s counsel, President’s Counsel Anuja Premarathna, argued that his client was in poor health. The court subsequently directed prison authorities to provide him with necessary medical care.

Rajapaksa was arrested by the Bribery Commission on August 6, over allegations that he unlawfully obtained Rs. 8.85 million in compensation for property—including a building—constructed without authorization on land owned by the Sri Lanka Mahaweli Authority in Sewanagala.

The property was allegedly damaged during the Aragalaya protests, and prosecutors claim Rajapaksa exerted undue influence on officials to secure compensation.
