The government will present a comprehensive Digital Education Policy Framework for Cabinet approval by March 2026, the Digital Task Force on Education Reform announced.

The update was shared during a Subcommittee meeting under the Ministerial Consultative Committee on Education, chaired by Prime Minister and Education Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya on September 23.

The framework focuses on six priority areas, including addressing the teacher shortage, expanding ICT resources, ensuring uninterrupted schooling during crises, and enhancing classroom learning with digital tools.

Authorities confirmed that all schools without internet access will be connected by December 31, 2025, while schools lacking basic resources will receive at least one smart board and a computer or laptop.

Data shows three schools still lack electricity, 546 schools have no computers, laptops, or tablets, and 2,088 remain without a smart board.

Calling the reforms a “major investment in the country’s future,” Dr. Amarasuriya urged stakeholders to actively share ideas with the Digital Task Force.

Deputy Minister Dr. Madhura Senevirathna, ministry officials, and MPs also attended the session.
